Commemorating 30 Years of Optical Vortices

CHANGCHUN, China, Nov. 6, 2019 — Thirty years ago, Pierre Coullet et al. proposed that a special optical field exists in laser cavities bearing some similarity with the superfluid vortex. This observation was the first indicator that optical vortices could exist. Since then, optical vortices have been widely studied and have facilitated advances that range from optical tweezers, to quantum entanglement, to nonlinear optics. To commemorate “30 years of optical vortices,” researchers at Tsinghua University and other institutions in China have reviewed the history of optical vortices over the past three decades,...Read full article

    optical tweezers
Optical tweezers refer to a scientific instrument that uses the pressure of laser light to trap and manipulate microscopic objects, such as particles or biological cells, in three dimensions. This technique relies on the momentum transfer of photons from the laser beam to the trapped objects, creating a stable trapping potential. Optical tweezers are widely used in physics, biology, and nanotechnology for studying and manipulating tiny structures at the microscale and nanoscale levels. Key...
