Output of 10 W achieved with optical efficiency of 44 percent.

The circular Gaussian beam of a vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (VECSEL) is more useful in numerous applications than the elliptical, nonsymmetrical beam emitted by edge-emitting lasers. The external-cavity design — with the output coupler physically separated from the laser chip — allows access to the intracavity space for nonlinear optics, mode-lockers and/or spectrum-controlling elements. These features make improvements in VECSEL technology of interest to a great many users. Figure 1. The nearly hemispheric resonator was formed by the external mirror and the...Read full article

    Glossary
    gaussian beam
A beam of light whose electrical field amplitude distribution is Gaussian. When such a beam is circular in cross section, the amplitude is E(r) = E(0) exp [-(r/w)2], where r is the distance from beam center and w is the radius at which the amplitude is 1/e of its value on the axis; w is called the beamwidth.
