Fiber optic sensors could warn people of imminent landslides, potentially saving lives and reducing destruction. A team at the Second University of Naples is developing sensor technology that could detect and monitor both large landslides and slow slope movements. The researchers hope to mitigate the effects of these major natural disasters, similar to the way hurricane tracking can prompt coastal evacuations. Optical fiber sensors embedded in shallow trenches within slopes would detect small shifts in the soil, the researchers said. Landslides are always preceded by various types...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESAll-Glass Fiber Optic Sensor Measures Force on Miniature ObjectsA team of researchers has designed a tiny fiber optic force sensor, approximately equal in diameter to a human hair, capable of measuring extremely slight forces exerted by small objects. These include polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in optical fibers,...Photonics HandbookPolarization Mode Dispersion: Concepts and Measurement: The performance of high-speed, digital fiber optic communications systems depends upon how reliably the receiver is able to distinguish closely spaced bits of information. Dispersive effects — physical mechanisms that broaden transmitted pulses — degrade this process. There are three fundamentally different dispersive phenomena in optical fiber, of which polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is the most complex. In digital multimode fiber systems, a light pulse...Photonics HandbookAdhesives for Fiber Optics Assembly: Making the Right Choice: Using the proper adhesive in the assembly of fiber optic components not only saves time and expense, but also can improve reliability and performance.Adhesives for fiber optic components that perform well on glass, metal, ceramic and most plastic substrates provide excellent chemical and solvent resistance.
