Ford Autonomous Vehicle Forgoes Headlights for Lidar

A recent test at the Ford Motor Company’s Arizona Proving Ground demonstrated the Ford Focus’s ability to use lidar sensor technology and 3D maps to drive in the dark without headlights. Ford said the development shows that even without light-dependent cameras, the lidar system and virtual driver software can successful steer around winding roads. While it’s ideal to have all three available modes of sensors — radar, cameras and lidar — the latter can function independently on roads without stoplights. Under the cover of night, a Ford Fusion Hybrid...Read full article

    lidar
Lidar, short for light detection and ranging, is a remote sensing technology that uses laser light to measure distances and generate precise, three-dimensional information about the shape and characteristics of objects and surfaces. Lidar systems typically consist of a laser scanner, a GPS receiver, and an inertial measurement unit (IMU), all integrated into a single system. Here is how lidar works: Laser emission: A laser emits laser pulses, often in the form of rapid and repetitive laser...
    positioning
Positioning generally refers to the determination or identification of the location or placement of an object, person, or entity in a specific space or relative to a reference point. The term is used in various contexts, and the methods for positioning can vary depending on the application. Key aspects of positioning include: Spatial coordinates: Positioning often involves expressing the location of an object in terms of spatial coordinates. These coordinates may include dimensions such as...
