SUZHOU, China, Nov. 9, 2021 — Glasses-free 3D displays could transform the portable electronics industry. However, the limited resolution of display panels in existing 3D displays compromises spatial and angular resolution as well as viewing angle capabilities. An approach to 3D displays developed by scientists at Soochow University distributes display information nonuniformly, based on the viewing habits of people. The new technique preserves high angular resolution in the central viewing region — while maintaining a wide viewing angle. In the Soochow team’s approach, spatially variant information...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESUltrathin Light-Field Imaging Film Yields Vivid 3D ImagesSoochow University researchers developed an ultrathin film based on light-field imaging — a technology that creates 3D images by capturing the direction and intensity of all light rays in a...Photonics.com 6/30/2022Liquid Crystal-Based Devices Manipulate Light with Flat Optics to Uncover Hidden ImagesAn ancient optical illusion has been updated using the flat optics of today to create a device that reveals a hidden image when light is shined on it. Digital ultraviolet imaging is becoming increasingly affordable and lends itself to a number of interesting applications that have been largely overlooked, and digital sensors are available that span the UV spectrum from 200 to 400 nm.Reflected-ultraviolet imaging is a rather mysterious area of the imaging field. There is relatively little actual UV imagery to be found on the Internet or in the literature compared to near-infrared...Photonics HandbookImage Intensification: The Technology of Night Vision: Through succeeding generations, image intensifying devices have brought vision to the dark of night.Image intensification, the basis of night vision, is a complex conversion of energy particles that occurs within a vacuum tube.
