A new technique expands on existing optical coherence tomography (OCT) methods to measure blood flow in the retina and explore how that relates to the development of glaucoma, one of the leading causes of blindness in industrialized countries. OCT is an important tool in diagnosing problems in the retina. Its downfall, however, is that it lacks the ability to provide more specific information about retinal function. A new technique is allowing enhanced study of glaucoma. Courtesy of the Austrian Science Fund. “We are testing the hypothesis that the blood flow in the...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLES4D OCT Helps to Solve Mystery of Early Embryonic HeartbeatScientists from Stevens Institute of Technology and Baylor College of Medicine used 4D optical coherence tomography (OCT) to study the pumping mechanism underlying the developing mammalian heart. 4D...BioPhotonics Nov/Dec 2020 IssueMachine Learning, OCT Combine to Detect Early-Stage Colon CancerResearchers at Washington University in St. Louis are developing a deep learning-based pattern recognition (PR)-OCT system that will automate image processing and provide accurate, computer-aided...BioPhotonics Mar/Apr 2020 IssueOn-Chip Tunable Photonic Delay Line Could Help Miniaturize OCT DevicesScientists at Columbia University have developed an on-chip, tunable photonic delay line to miniaturize imaging technology. Resolution, however, is a more complex concept.Camera resolution depends upon the optical blur diameter and the detector size. Schade combined these to create an equivalent resolution that is a function of Fλ/d where F is the focal ratio,...Photonics HandbookFluorescence Lifetime Imaging: Choosing the Best Approach: Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM), which measures the spatial distribution of the fluorescence decay, can be achieved either in the time or in the frequency domain. Each approach exhibits advantages and disadvantages, depending on the type of light detector and acquisition method employed. The term fluorescence is often applied as a synonym for photoluminescence, although luminescence actually covers fluorescence and phosphorescence. Both of these terms describe the process of...Photonics HandbookAspheric Lenses: Design Considerations: This first of two articles will cover design and manufacturing options for aspheres; the second will include more detail on manufacturing and testing processes. These articles will provide the tools optics designers need to tailor their designs to the appropriate manufacturing process and to optimize the cost of component fabrication.Aspheric surfaces are powerful tools that combine the optical corrections of multiple lenses into a single element (Figure 1) and affect performance in ways that spherical optics cannot. For example,...Photonics HandbookBroadband Spectrophotometry: A Fast, Simple, Accurate Tool: Broadband spectrophotometers coupled with relatively simple algorithms can provide fast, nondestructive and comprehensive characterization of thin films.Designing devices that incorporate ultrathin films is an important means of enhancing yields.
