HAMAMATSU CITY, Japan, Aug. 21, 2020 — Hamamatsu Photonics has completed a new building for research and development, replacing an old location at the Toyooka Factory site in Shimokanzo, Iwata City, Japan. Construction began in January 2019 and was completed in early August 2020. The five-floor, 4174-sq-m building encompasses 18,001 sq m of floor space and features laboratory space, cleanrooms, office space, exhibition space, and a cafeteria. Operations at the new site will begin in September.Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESLASER COMPONENTS Detector Group Opens FacilityLASER COMPONENTS Detector Group opened its new 29,000-sq-ft facility in Chandler, Ariz. Enter Class 1 laser products — lasers that are so safe that the user doesn’t require specific laser safety training or protective eyewear. Some precautions still exist, though. When purchasing an industrial laser system, the astute buyer will look for a Class 1 laser product — a system where the laser beam hazard is completely enclosed and there is no potential laser...Photonics HandbookDetectors: Options for Low-Light Applications: Silicon photomultipliers and photomultiplier tubes each boast unmatched sensitivity, yet their distinct characteristics make them suited for different uses.Developed in the early 1990s, the silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) is a solid-state photodetector whose sensitivity to light rivals that of a photomultiplier tube (PMT) in a regime where a few hundred...Photonics HandbookSemiconductor Lasers: An Overview of Commercial Devices: Within only a few decades, the semiconductor laser diode has evolved into a family of robust, reliable devices, with individual conversion efficiencies of better than 60 percent, continuous output powers of several kilowatts, modulation rates of several tens of gigahertz, and wavelengths from 0.4 to beyond 2 µm. This article discusses the structures and characteristics of the most common commercial varieties.Laser diodes vary widely in their wavelengths, powers, spectra and beam quality.
