Controlling and minimizing heat output is desirable in most lighting applications. For example, conventional incandescent light sources are very inefficient with only a small portion of the electrical power used converted into visible light. If the entire output from a tungsten bulb is concentrated in a projection system or a spotlight, a tremendous amount of unnecessary heat is also put through the system.
