A device that is able to generate single photons on demand in groups of several dozen or more could help scientists overcome one of the fundamental obstacles facing the construction of quantum computers. The heart of the system to generate groups of photons is a glass cell filled with hot gas vapor. Illuminating the cell with a laser results in the emission of photons with a wavelength in the infrared spectrum range. Courtesy of UW Physics/Mateusz Mazelanik. Dispersive effects — physical mechanisms that broaden transmitted pulses — degrade this process. There are three fundamentally different dispersive phenomena in optical fiber, of which polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is the most complex. In digital multimode fiber systems, a light pulse...Photonics HandbookWHITEPAPERSAnnular Heating of Optical Fiber with a CO2 Laser Using Reflective Axicon ElementsBy offsetting the light structure, precise localized zone heating and annealing of specific areas at a fiber’s surface can be achieved as well.
