Hybrid Silicon Laser Chip That Emits, Guides Light Developed

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 18, 2006 -- Researchers announced today that they have, for the first time, combined the light-emitting properties of indium phosphide with the light-routing capabilities of silicon into a single hybrid chip, creating a chip that can transfer data by laser light. The breakthrough, which uses standard silicon manufacturing processes, addresses one of the last major barriers to producing low-cost, high-bandwidth silicon photonics devices for computers and data centers. Hybrid silicon laser die containing hundreds of hybrid silicon lasers.
