Researchers from the Institute of Photonic Sciences’ (ICFO) Attoscience and Ultrafast Optics Group have reported on the imaging of molecular bond breakup in acetylene (C2H2) 9 fs after its ionization. The team was able to track the individual atoms of the isolated acetylene molecule with a spatial resolution of 0.05 Å and a temporal resolution of 0.6 fs. They were also able to trigger the breakup of one molecule bond and see how one proton leaves the molecule. Illustration of laser-induced diffraction imaging of a molecular bond breakup in acetylene. From that beginning the laser has become an integral part of the conventional technology in many production plants. In the forefront of that revolution has been the CO2 laser, today a varied and sophisticated tool.In the three decades since its introduction, the CO2 laser has become the workhorse of industrial lasers. Today it is available in a range of designs and sizes with output powers of 20 kW and more....Photonics HandbookDigital Cameras: Smaller Pixels for Higher Resolution: Reducing pixel size can increase a digital camera's performance. However, there are tradeoffs that need to be considered when going that route. In the search for ever-higher pixel counts for the digital still camera, it is clear that, if chip size remains constant, then “more pixels” means “smaller pixels.” The...Photonics HandbookPolarization Mode Dispersion: Concepts and Measurement: The performance of high-speed, digital fiber optic communications systems depends upon how reliably the receiver is able to distinguish closely spaced bits of information. Dispersive effects — physical mechanisms that broaden transmitted pulses — degrade this process. There are three fundamentally different dispersive phenomena in optical fiber, of which polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is the most complex. In digital multimode fiber systems, a light pulse...Photonics HandbookUltraviolet Reflectance Imaging: Applications: Ultraviolet imaging has long been thought to be difficult and awkward by many photographers because of the difficulties encountered when using photographic film in the UV band. Digital ultraviolet imaging is becoming increasingly affordable and lends itself to a number of interesting applications that have been largely overlooked, and digital sensors are available that span the UV spectrum from 200 to 400 nm.Reflected-ultraviolet imaging is a rather mysterious area of the imaging field. There is relatively little actual UV imagery to be found on the Internet or in the literature compared to near-infrared...Photonics HandbookWHITEPAPERS100% Customized Super Precision Glass Substrate and PartsFor over 65 years, Fujitok has supplied customized precision glass substrates, aspheric lenses, and prisms with cutting-edge polishing technology.
