Ultrathin Fresnel Lens Could Make IR Imagers Cheaper

An innovative ultrathin lens could lead to more affordable IR thermal imaging cameras. The 1-mm-thick silicon Fresnel lens was developed by researchers from the French aerospace lab Onera, French thermal imaging sensor company ULIS, the Optical Institute and the French National Center for Scientific Research. A picture taken with the new camera. The system can detect people and some details of a setting, in this case an office. Images courtesy of Optics Letters. Silicon is less expensive than materials traditionally used in IR cameras such as germanium and chalcogenide, and...Read full article

    chalcogenide
Chalcogenide refers to a class of compounds containing elements from group 16 of the periodic table, which includes sulfur (S), selenium (Se), and tellurium (Te). These elements are known as chalcogens. Chalcogenides are typically formed by combining one or more chalcogens with other elements, such as metals or metalloids. Chalcogenides are of particular interest in materials science and technology due to their unique properties, which include: Semiconductor behavior: Many chalcogenides...
    fresnel lens
A lens resembling a planoconvex or planoconcave lens that is cut into narrow rings and flattened. If the steps are narrow, the surface of each step is generally made conical and not spherical. Fresnel lenses can be large glass structures as in lighthouses, floodlights or traffic signals, or thin molded plastic plates with fine steps; often used for field lenses.
    germanium
A crystalline semiconductor material that transmits in the infrared.
