JOEL WILLIAMS, ASSOCIATE EDITOR [email protected]Planetary scientists at Brown University have introduced an infrared spectroscopic method for studying olivine, a mineral that provides insights into the formation of the moon, Mars, and other planetary bodies. Informally dubbed “crossover spectroscopy,” the scientists deployed the technique to examine the spectral range in between the visible near-infrared (0.5 to 3 μm) and the mid-infrared ranges (8 to 15 μm). The researchers honed in on the 4 to 8 μm range, and, even more specifically, in the spectral features of olivine at 5.6 and 6.0 μm. A mountain peak at the...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESErbium-Doped Fluoroindate Glass Shows Promise for Mid-IR LasingA research team from the Xi’an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has revealed the spectroscopic properties of Er3+-doped fluoroindate glasses. The layer of gases that we breathe also distorts the images formed by telescopes. This means that conventional telescopes of more than a few centimeters in diameter cannot reach the resolution limit set by their optics. To Isaac Newton the problem was clear, and in 1704 he realized the effects of atmospheric turbulence on image formation. Just as heat waves shimmering above a hot patch of ground can distort our...Photonics HandbookSelecting a Photodetector: Using WITS$ as a Rough Guide: Performance of a photodetector with respect to the four basic attributes of light, in addition to cost, can be used to make an appropriate choice.Light is a versatile tool for investigating physical and chemical processes in nature.
