Sometimes taking to the skies is the best way to see what’s happening on the ground. Rothamsted Research of Harpenden, England, hopes that will be the case for crop studies: The agricultural research institute has obtained a remote-controlled unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) called an octocopter, outfitted with four different cameras, to further its work in the fields. Two of the cameras can send a live feed to a monitor on the ground at any time. Eight-rotor battery-powered UAVs such as the octocopter are fairly common in the film industry, but less so on farms. One camera takes...Read full article

    hyperspectral imaging
Hyperspectral imaging is an advanced imaging technique that captures and processes information from across the electromagnetic spectrum. Unlike traditional imaging systems that record only a few spectral bands (such as red, green, and blue in visible light), hyperspectral imaging collects data in numerous contiguous bands, covering a wide range of wavelengths. This extended spectral coverage enables detailed analysis and characterization of materials based on their spectral signatures. Key...
    machine vision
Machine vision, also known as computer vision or computer sight, refers to the technology that enables machines, typically computers, to interpret and understand visual information from the world, much like the human visual system. It involves the development and application of algorithms and systems that allow machines to acquire, process, analyze, and make decisions based on visual data. Key aspects of machine vision include: Image acquisition: Machine vision systems use various...
    unmanned aerial vehicle
An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone, is an aircraft without a human pilot onboard. UAVs are remotely controlled or autonomously operated, and they can be used for various purposes across different industries. These vehicles range in size from small hobbyist models to large military or commercial drones. Key characteristics of unmanned aerial vehicles include: Remotely piloted or autonomous: UAVs can be operated by a human pilot using a remote control system or, in...
