Laser-Writing Method Supports Long-term 5D Optical Data Storage

University of Southampton researchers have developed a fast and energy-efficient laser-writing method for producing high-density nanostructures in silica glass. The resulting tiny structures can be used for long-term five-dimensional (5D) optical data storage that is more than 10,000× denser than Blu-ray optical disc storage technology. “Individuals and organizations are generating ever-larger data sets, creating the desperate need for more efficient forms of data storage with a high-capacity, low energy consumption, and long lifetime,” said doctoral researcher Yuhao...Read full article

    GLOSSARY
    optical disc
A rigid medium, generally a polycarbonate substrate coated with a reflective aluminum layer, that stores information (such as audio, video or data) as digital bits in the form of variations in the reflective surface, and that modulates a laser beam to decode the stored data. Optical disc formats include read-only (ROM) and write-once/read-many (WORM); erasable discs include phase-change, magneto-optical and dye-polymer media.
    glass
A noncrystalline, inorganic mixture of various metallic oxides fused by heating with glassifiers such as silica, or boric or phosphoric oxides. Common window or bottle glass is a mixture of soda, lime and sand, melted and cast, rolled or blown to shape. Most glasses are transparent in the visible spectrum and up to about 2.5 µm in the infrared, but some are opaque such as natural obsidian; these are, nevertheless, useful as mirror blanks. Traces of some elements such as cobalt, copper and...
