Laser Surface Modification Aims to Reduce Infection from Implants

To help prevent infections caused by orthopedic implants, Purdue University researchers developed a laser-assisted surface modification process that may improve the efficacy of the implanted device. Most ortho device-related infections occur because the surface of the implant has poor antibacterial and osteo-inductive properties. The laser-assisted process immobilizes silver onto the titanium surfaces of the device that have been laser-nanotextured to boost bone cell mineralization and the antimicrobial properties of the device. “The first step of the two-step process...Read full article

    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
