With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Lehigh University's Center for Photonics and Nanoelectronics (CPN) is creating a new high-pressure spatial chemical vapor deposition (HPS-CVD) reactor. The interdisciplinary faculty team, co-led by professors Nelson Tansu and Siddha Pimputkar, has recently secured funding from the NSF's Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Program to create the system. Completion is expected by January 2019. The system will enable new capabilities in material synthesis that include growth under extremely high-pressure conditions, growth...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESUniversity of Michigan Awarded $18.5M for 3-PW ZEUS Laser, FacilityThe 3-petawatt (PW) ZEUS laser at the University of Michigan has been awarded $18.5 million by the NSF to establish it as a federally funded international user facility. A typical optical delay line consists of a retroreflector or folding mirrors on...Photonics HandbookLight-Emitting Diodes: A Primer: Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are semiconductors that convert electrical energy into light energy. The color of the emitted light depends on the semiconductor material and composition, with LEDs generally classified into three wavelengths: ultraviolet, visible, and infrared. The wavelength range of commercially available LEDs with single-element output power of at least 5 mW is 275 to 950 nm. Each wavelength range is made from a specific semiconductor material family,...Photonics HandbookLaser Measurement Systems: Best Practices: When purchasing a laser, learning how to apply, troubleshoot, and evaluate that device is very important.Given the pace at which technology advances, there always seems to be a learning curve. These articles will provide the tools optics designers need to tailor their designs to the appropriate manufacturing process and to optimize the cost of component fabrication.Aspheric surfaces are powerful tools that combine the optical corrections of multiple lenses into a single element (Figure 1) and affect performance in ways that spherical optics cannot. For example,...Photonics HandbookWHITEPAPERSCharacterizing the temperature-induced evolution of the shape and texture of a silicon waferUsing Linkam’s precision temperature control chamber with Sensofar’s Linnik objective lens eliminates these problems and allows accurate measurement of 3D topographic profiles of nanoscale materials....Photonics.com 12/10/2021Light Changes Matter – with Optics, Lasers and SensorsJenoptik is a global OEM supplier of solutions and products based on photonics technologies with more than 25 years experience in the fields of optics, laser technology, digital imaging,...Photonics.com 12/2/2020Machine Vision Lens for Wafer, Food InspectionMyutron offers SWIR telecentric lenses suitable for wafer and food inspection.
