Researchers at Dresden University of Technology (TU Dresden) have developed a tiny, self-calibrating endoscope that produces 3D images of objects smaller than a single cell. Without a lens or any optical, electrical, or mechanical components, the tip of the endoscope measures just 200 μm across. To build a self-calibrating endoscope, the researchers added a 150-μm-thick glass plate to the tip of a coherent fiber bundle (a type of optical fiber that is commonly found in endoscopy applications). The fiber bundle is about 350 μm wide and consists of 10,000 cores. Each approach exhibits advantages and disadvantages, depending on the type of light detector and acquisition method employed. The term fluorescence is often applied as a synonym for photoluminescence, although luminescence actually covers fluorescence and phosphorescence. Both of these terms describe the process of...Photonics HandbookOptical Delay Lines: Key to Time-Resolved Measurements: To obtain an accurate means of creating reliable delays in any time-resolved spectroscopy or dynamic experiment, several factors about the delay line stage must be considered to reduce or eliminate errors associated with linear stages. One of the most critical elements of any time-resolved spectroscopy and dynamics experiment is the optical delay line. A typical optical delay line consists of a retroreflector or folding mirrors on...Photonics HandbookDigital Still Cameras: The Changing Face of Imaging: The digital camera reflects a sea change in the compact camera market.
