Lidar and Data Fusion Increase AI Performance

The combination of multiple images from various sensors results in the effective detection of distance as well as potential hazards for self-driving automobiles.

Pablo García-Gómez, Jordi Riu, and Santiago Royo, Beamagine SL

Imaging lidar sensors are one of the primary components in systems used for perception tasks in autonomous vehicles. The 3D data generated by lidar while a vehicle is in motion is considered useful because such data is the result of measuring real-time physical occurrences. These include events such as the time delay between two laser pulses (in the case of the pulsed time-of-flight technique) or the Doppler shift of the returned signal (in the frequency-modulated continuous-wave approach). parallax
The optical phenomenon that causes relative motion between two objects when the eyepoint is moved laterally. When parallax appears in a telescope between the image and reticle, this indicates the image has not been formed in the plane of the reticle.
    lidar
Lidar, short for light detection and ranging, is a remote sensing technology that uses laser light to measure distances and generate precise, three-dimensional information about the shape and characteristics of objects and surfaces. Lidar systems typically consist of a laser scanner, a GPS receiver, and an inertial measurement unit (IMU), all integrated into a single system. Here is how lidar works: Laser emission: A laser emits laser pulses, often in the form of rapid and repetitive laser...
