A microscopy technique developed by researchers at TU Wien (Austria) in collaboration with TU Munich could lead to more reliable cancer diagnostics. The technique allows a tumor to be analyzed after surgery in 3D without cutting the tumor into sections. Previous methods for assessing the success of cancer surgery required pathologists to cut very thin sections, approximately 4 µm thick every 5 mm. These samples were then analyzed under a microscope to determine the presence or absence of cancer cells. That method examines only a very small amount of the tumor. A chemically...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESVR, Superresolution Microscopy Take Scientists Inside Human CellsA joint development between University of Cambridge scientists and 3D image analysis software company Lume VR Ltd. is enabling the visualization of superresolution microscopy data — data that...BioPhotonics Jan/Feb 2021 IssueSpectroscopic Toolkit for Structural Biology Could Aid in Drug DesignA fluorescence-based imaging technique for monitoring single molecules could lead to a better understanding of how molecules are assembled, function, and interact, aiding in structure-guided drug...BioPhotonics May/Jun 2020 IssueHybrid Microscope Improves Efficiency of Tissue PathologyResearchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have paired infrared capabilities with high-resolution optical microscopy and machine learning to bring cancer diagnostics into the...BioPhotonics May/Jun 2020 IssueMIR Upconversion Imaging Could Speed Medical DiagnosticsResearchers from multiple institutions collaborated to develop a way to translate information from the mid-infrared (MIR) region, where chemical signatures are most distinct, to the near-infrared...BioPhotonics Jul/Aug 2019 IssuePRODUCTSPCB Identification AppThe DXF Overlay application from TAGARNO allows microscope users to identify miniature printed circuit board (PCB) components during quality control processes. Brighter, easier to use and growing in application, they are driving new options in fluorescence, conventional bright-field and other contrast techniques. As recently as five years ago, shopping for a microscope light source was fairly straightforward. For routine applications, it was tungsten halogen, typically 100 W, while for fluorescence, it was an...Photonics HandbookLaser Safety: Important Considerations: Laser safety is nothing to scoff at; lasers can be hazardous. Enter Class 1 laser products — lasers that are so safe that the user doesn’t require specific laser safety training or protective eyewear. Some precautions still exist, though. When purchasing an industrial laser system, the astute buyer will look for a Class 1 laser product — a system where the laser beam hazard is completely enclosed and there is no potential laser...Photonics HandbookMeasuring Surface Roughness: The Benefits of Laser Confocal Microscopy: 3D imaging and ultrahigh resolution are ideal for the inspection of materials with defined surface finishes and textures. When evaluating the surface of a component, surface roughness can be assessed by eye or by rubbing it with a fingertip.
