PARIS, June 2, 2016 — Microscopy developer Mauna Kea Technologies SA has received its twelfth 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The new FDA clearance covers its confocal miniprobes for use in urological and minimally invasive surgical applications with its NIR (near-infrared) Cellvizio platform. The company said its NIR imaging products are designed to provide a positive impact on procedural outcomes by adding the precision and reliability of real-time cellular characterization to fluorescence-guided procedures. Mauna Kea is a global medical device company focused on the...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESVASCOVID Project Seeks to Improve Patient CareA newly launched project, VASCOVID, has been selected as one of 23 initiatives from the EU’s recent call for coronavirus research projects. Each approach exhibits advantages and disadvantages, depending on the type of light detector and acquisition method employed. The term fluorescence is often applied as a synonym for photoluminescence, although luminescence actually covers fluorescence and phosphorescence. Both of these terms describe the process of...Photonics HandbookAspheric Lenses: Design Considerations: This first of two articles will cover design and manufacturing options for aspheres; the second will include more detail on manufacturing and testing processes. These articles will provide the tools optics designers need to tailor their designs to the appropriate manufacturing process and to optimize the cost of component fabrication.Aspheric surfaces are powerful tools that combine the optical corrections of multiple lenses into a single element (Figure 1) and affect performance in ways that spherical optics cannot. For example,...Photonics HandbookTunable Light Sources: A Popular Choice for Measurement Applications: Common goals of spectroscopy applications such as studying the chemical or biological properties of a material often dictate the requirements of the measurement system’s lamp, power supply, and monochromator. Many common spectroscopic measurements require the coordinated operation of a detection instrument and light source, as well as data acquisition and processing. Integration of individual components...Photonics HandbookCamera Resolution: Combining Detector and Optics Performance: Most image-quality discussions center on resolution, which is thought to uniquely determine system performance. Resolution, however, is a more complex concept.Camera resolution depends upon the optical blur diameter and the detector size.
