Metamaterial Lets Light-Sheet Microscopes See in Superresolution

SAN DIEGO, June 4, 2021 — A hyperbolic metamaterial developed at the University of California, San Diego enables ordinary light-sheet microscopes to observe subcellular structures — in other words, enabling an ordinary light microscope to see in superresolution. The material, made up of nanometers-thin alternating layers of silver and silica glass, shortens the wavelength of light as the sample is illuminated, which allows the microscope to see beyond the diffraction limit. In the application, the light-shrinking material converts low-resolution light to high-resolution light, said Zhaowei Liu, a professor...Read full article

    superresolution
Superresolution refers to the enhancement or improvement of the spatial resolution beyond the conventional limits imposed by the diffraction of light. In the context of imaging, it is a set of techniques and algorithms that aim to achieve higher resolution images than what is traditionally possible using standard imaging systems. In conventional optical microscopy, the resolution is limited by the diffraction of light, a phenomenon described by Ernst Abbe's diffraction limit. This limit sets a...
