Method ‘Tags and Tracks’ DNA Looping

DALLAS, Aug. 20, 2012 — A “tag and track” method using fluorescent molecules not only sheds light on how DNA loops form, but also might be adapted to screen drugs for effectiveness against certain viruses that shuffle genetic material, such as HIV. Dr. Stephen Levene, a bioengineering, molecular and cell biology and physics professor at the University of Texas at Dallas, and doctoral student Massa Shoura developed the method to monitor the stages of DNA looping, a natural biological mechanism common in many instances of gene-splicing. Dr. Stephen Levene and doctoral student Massa Shoura have...Read full article

    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
