Micronic Losses Lead to Cuts

TÄBY, Sweden, Oct. 17, 2008 -- After posting a third quarter loss of 35 million SEK (about $4.7 million), Sweden-based microlithography technology company Micronic Laser Systems AB announced today it will cut more jobs. Micronic makes high-end laser-pattern generators used to produce photomasks. Photomasks are needed to manufacture semiconductor chips and displays (flat-panel and computer) and for semiconductor packaging components. The company also develops metrology systems for display photomasks at its headquarters in Täby, outside Stockholm. It has a US subsidiary, Micronic Laser Systems Inc., based in San Jose,...Read full article

    Glossary
    metrology
Metrology is the science and practice of measurement. It encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, including the development of measurement standards, techniques, and instruments, as well as the application of measurement principles in various fields. The primary objectives of metrology are to ensure accuracy, reliability, and consistency in measurements and to establish traceability to recognized standards. Metrology plays a crucial role in science, industry,...
    microlithography
A technique for producing micron-size structures on surfaces by using short-wavelength light or electron beams.
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    pattern
A device that determines the lens shape in the cutting or edging phase of fabrication. It also is used to denote the arrangement of markings on a reticle.
    photomask
A photomask, also known simply as a mask or reticle, is a key component in the photolithography process used in semiconductor manufacturing and other areas of microfabrication. It is a high-precision plate or glass substrate that carries a pattern of opaque and transparent regions. Photomasks are crucial for transferring intricate patterns onto semiconductor wafers during the photolithography process. The photomask is typically placed in the optical path between a light source and a...
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
