ST. LOUIS, March 24, 2010 – The National Science Foundation has awarded $1.65 million to a project led by physicist Kenneth Kelton of Washington University in St. Louis to build an electrostatic levitation chamber. Using neutrons as a probe, the instrument will allow scientists to watch atoms in a suspended drop of liquid as the drop cools and solidifies. Kelton, the Arthur Holly Compton professor in arts & sciences and chairman of physics at Washington University, has many plans for the new instrument, which will be installed at the Spallation Neutron Source in Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. advanced photon source
An accelerator at the Argonne National Laboratory, providing powerful x-ray beams for materials research applications.
    glass
A noncrystalline, inorganic mixture of various metallic oxides fused by heating with glassifiers such as silica, or boric or phosphoric oxides. Common window or bottle glass is a mixture of soda, lime and sand, melted and cast, rolled or blown to shape. Most glasses are transparent in the visible spectrum and up to about 2.5 µm in the infrared, but some are opaque such as natural obsidian; these are, nevertheless, useful as mirror blanks. Traces of some elements such as cobalt, copper and...
    radiation
The emission and/or propagation of energy through space or through a medium in the form of either waves or corpuscular emission.
