NIST Proposes New Definition for Optical Watt

Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) seek to develop a more precise definition for the standard unit of light power, the optical watt. Instead of the current definition, which is based on comparisons to electrical heating, the NIST study suggests that the optical watt could be determined from light’s radiation force and speed. “We are pursuing research to enable the radiation pressure approach to make the most accurate measurement of laser power in the world,” physicist Paul Williams said. To measure optical power the conventional...Read full article

    metrology
Metrology is the science and practice of measurement. It encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, including the development of measurement standards, techniques, and instruments, as well as the application of measurement principles in various fields. The primary objectives of metrology are to ensure accuracy, reliability, and consistency in measurements and to establish traceability to recognized standards. Metrology plays a crucial role in science, industry,...
    photometry
Photometry is the branch of science that deals with the measurement of light, particularly in terms of its intensity and the way the human eye perceives it. It involves the quantification of visible light and its characteristics, such as brightness and color. Photometric measurements often consider the spectral sensitivity of the human eye to different wavelengths of light and use standardized units to express light intensity. In astronomy, photometry is used to study the brightness of...
