GAITHERSBURG, Md., May 2, 2019 — A better understanding of the interaction between laser and metal could give industry more control over laser welding, according to a three-year study in laser welding conducted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The data that NIST scientists collected is being used by computer modelers to improve simulations of laser welding processes, a step toward applying the results of the study to industry. The goal of the NIST team is to build a firm foundation for a model for laser welding that will help manufacturers determine which combination of laser settings will...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESResearchers Push Boundaries of High-Energy Laser PulsesINRS researchers have pushed the boundaries of high-energy laser pulse propagation, with reliance on the observation of high-energy multidimensional solitary states (MDSS), allowing the direct...Photonics Spectra February 2021 IssueResearchers Turn Laser Sintering on Its HeadSelective laser sintering (SLS), a process that uses a laser to heat powder materials to the point where the micron-scale particles fuse together to form a solid mass, is one of the most widely used...Photonics Spectra October 2020 IssueOptical Ruler’s Expanded Frequencies Support Precision NavigationResearchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) expanded by nearly two-thirds the frequency range over which a chip-scale device can accurately generate and measure the...Photonics.com 3/11/2022Scattering Phenomenon Could Improve Optical CommunicationsA phenomenon observed in a miniature light-scattering system composed of an ultrathin layer of silicon nitride on a chip could lead to improved optical communications and sensors.
