Ashley N. Rice, [email protected]

A chip-scale instrument made of carbon nanotubes may simplify absolute measurements of laser power, especially the light signals transmitted by optical fibers in telecommunication networks. A prototype device developed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is a silicon chip topped with circular mats of carbon nanotubes standing on end. The miniature cryogenic radiometer builds on NIST’s previous work using nanotubes to make an ultra-efficient, highly accurate optical power detector, and advances the ability to measure laser power delivered through fiber for...Read full article

    Glossary
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
