New Approach Facilitates Spectroscopy on Individual Molecules

MUNICH, March 11, 2019 — A new spectroscopic measurement method, developed by scientists at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), determines the spectral properties of individual molecules, providing precise information about the interaction of single molecules with their environment. The technique uses a compact instrument developed by the Munich scientists in collaboration with colleagues at the Politecnico di Milano to generate a double laser pulse with a controlled delay in between. The second pulse modulates the emission spectrum in a specific manner, which in turn provides information about the...Read full article

    fluorescence
Fluorescence is a type of luminescence, which is the emission of light by a substance that has absorbed light or other electromagnetic radiation. Specifically, fluorescence involves the absorption of light at one wavelength and the subsequent re-emission of light at a longer wavelength. The emitted light occurs almost instantaneously and ceases when the excitation light source is removed. Key characteristics of fluorescence include: Excitation and emission wavelengths: Fluorescent materials...
    single-molecule spectroscopy
An advanced technique that allows the detection of one molecule within a crystal or a cell through optical excitation. Single-molecule spectroscopy (SMS) can image at subwavelength scales, down to a dozen of nanometers. It has applications in various fields of natural science, including but not limited to biophysics, quantum physics and nanoscience. SMS helps clarify long-standing problems in chemistry and biology, such as observing and examining single molecules. It also provides critical...
