UPTON, N.Y., May 3, 2012 — Construction of the $912 million National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) at the US Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory is more than 70 percent complete, the facility announced. When operational in 2015, the new light source will allow unprecedented research in energy, materials and medicine. Brookhaven Lab celebrated two major construction milestones: the completion of the massive ring building and the commissioning of the light source’s linear accelerator. The project is currently on schedule and on budget. “With the ring building...Read full article

    linear accelerator
A device used to accelerate the electrons in a free-electron laser. There are several types, including the induction linear accelerator, the radio frequency linear accelerator and the superconducting linear accelerator.
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
