Plasmonic metamaterial absorber acts as UV-protective coating

A new approach to tunable plasmonic metamaterials for high UV frequencies could pave the way for their application in UV-protective coatings, as well as thermophotovoltaics and stealth technology. Researchers in Germany have designed a tunable plasmonic metamaterial super absorber (PMSA) that can function as a UV-protective film. Typically, plasmonic metamaterials designed for optical frequency must be shrunk down to a few tenths of a nanometer, making their manufacturing cumbersome. In this study, researchers designed and fabricated a tunable silver-SiO2 nanocomposite on a highly...Read full article

    Glossary
    bandwidth
The range of frequencies over which a particular instrument is designed to function within specified limits. See also fiber bandwidth.
    dielectric
Exhibiting the characteristic of materials that are electrical insulators or in which an electric field can be sustained with a minimum dispersion of power. They exhibit nonlinear properties, such as anisotropy of conductivity or polarization, or saturation phenomena.
    ultraviolet
That invisible region of the spectrum just beyond the violet end of the visible region. Wavelengths range from 1 to 400 nm.
