System Uses Shadows to Detect Peripheral Movement for Autonomous Vehicles

Engineers at MIT have developed a system that can detect minute changes in shadows on the ground to determine if there’s a moving object rounding a corner. The technique is showing promise as a safety feature for autonomous vehicles.
