IRVINE, Calif., July 20, 2010 — Advanced technology products maker Newport Corp. announced Tuesday that it has sold its Hilger Crystals subsidiary to Dynasil Corp. of West Berlin, N.J., for $4 million in cash. Margate, UK-based Hilger manufactures a variety of synthetic crystals and detectors, imaging arrays and materials, primarily for x-ray detection applications. According to its website, Hilger was founded in 1874 by German precision optical instrument technicians Adam and Otto Hilger and began growing synthetic crystals in the early 1900s. In January 2003, the company became part of Spectra-Physics, then joined...Read full article

    Glossary
    fused silica
Glass consisting of almost pure silicon dioxide (SiO2). Also called vitreous silica. Frequently used in optical fibers and windows.
    laser optics
Laser optics refers to a broad category of optical components and systems designed for manipulating and controlling laser light. Laser optics play a crucial role in shaping the characteristics of laser beams, such as their intensity, wavelength, polarization, and spatial profile. laser optics suppliers → Here are some common types of laser optics components: Lenses: Lenses are used to focus or collimate laser beams. Plano-convex, plano-concave, and biconvex lenses are...
    optical
Pertaining to optics and the phenomena of light.
    reflective
The term reflective is an adjective that describes the ability of a surface or material to reflect light or other forms of radiation. It implies the capability of bouncing back or redirecting incident light waves. The reflective property is often quantified by the reflectivity or reflectance, which is the ratio of reflected light intensity to the incident light intensity. Key points about the term reflective: Surface property: When a surface is described as reflective, it means that the...
    x-ray detection
The collection and detection of x-rays by virtue of their ionizing properties. The ionization may be perceived directly by a gas-filled ionization chamber, photographically, or by correlating fluorescence effects. To evaluate the spectrum of x-rays, the use of x-ray diffraction from a crystal, as in the Bragg spectrometer, is efficient.
