With groundbreaking research and innovative technology development, the future of the photonics industry is continually evolving. The Optics and Photonics International Conference (OPIC) will bring such developments, as well as a look at the future’s potential, to the Pacifico Yokohama convention complex in Japan from April 23 to 27. OPIC — organized by the Optics and Photonics International Council and co-chaired by Yoshiaki Kato and Kazuo Kuroda — focuses on “the future of our society, which will be realized by optics and photonics, based on the most updated knowledge and technologies worldwide.” The Optics and Photonics International Conference and Exhibition 2018 will be held at the Pacifico Yokohama convention complex in Japan from April 23 to 27. At this year’s conference, plenary sessions will cover a range of industry topics, from VCSELs (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers) to photoacoustic tomography. Featured speakers are: • Mutsuko Hatano, an engineering professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. In “Diamond Electronics and Photonics: Application to Quantum Sensors,” she will introduce highly sensitive diamond sensors by applying advanced nanodevice technologies, quantum sensing protocols and module systems. She will also discuss such systems’ applications in biological imaging, nanoscale NMR and device sensing.v • Wim Leemans, director of both the Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics Division and the BELLA Center at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California. He will examine “experiments on laser plasma accelerators with the BELLA laser,” and explore the path toward future applications. • Joseph Pankert, general manager of Philips Photonics at Philips Group Innovation, will focus on “VCSELs in every car, every home and every mobile device.” He will discuss the widespread use of VCSELs in mobile device optical sensors, as well as “the ever-increasing data traffic that requires optical interconnects even for consumer devices.” The technology and its applications will also be featured, in addition to current developments and future expectations. • Lihong V. Wang, Bren professor of medical and electrical engineering at the California Institute of Technology. His talk, “Photoacoustic Tomography: Deep Tissue Imaging by Ultrasonically Beating Optical Diffusion,” will focus on the development of photoacoustic tomography (PAT) for in vivo functional, metabolic, molecular and histologic imaging. Its applications, which include early cancer detection and brain imaging, will also be included, as will wavefront engineering and compressed ultrafast photography. Comprising academia and industry, OPIC 2018 features 14 specialized subconferences: Advanced Lasers and Photon Sources (ALPS); International Conference on High Energy Density Science (HEDS); IoT Enabling Sensing/Network/AI and Photonics Conference (IoT-SNAP); 6th International Conference on Light-Emitting Devices and Industrial Applications (LEDIA); Conference on Laser and Synchrotron Radiation Combination Experiment (LSC); 5th Optical Manipulation Conference (OMC); 3rd Smart Laser Processing Conference (SLPC); 4th Biomedical Imaging and Sensing Conference (BISC); International Conference on Nanophotonics and Nano-optoelectronics (ICNN); Laser Display and Lighting Conference (LDC); 6th Laser Ignition Conference (LIC); Laser Solutions for Space and the Earth (LSSE); Pacific Rim Laser Damage (PLD); and International Conference on X-ray Optics and Applications (XOPT). The Optics and Photonics International Exhibition 2018 (OPIE 2018) will be held alongside OPIC 2018. More than 15,000 visitors attended OPIE 2017, which featured companies from around the world demonstrating “the latest light-based technologies and laser products.” OPIE 2018 organizers anticipate a similar turnout.
