ORA, QED to Integrate Software and Surface Formulations

PASADENA, Calif., and ROCHESTER, N.Y., June 11, 2010 — Optical design software maker Optical Research Associates and QED Technologies, finishing and metrology products provider to the precision optics industry, today announced a cooperative agreement that will integrate QED's aspheric characterization formulations into ORA's CODE V® software to facility easier design, analysis and tolerancing of aspheric surfaces. Although aspheric surfaces offer significant advantages to optical systems, the conventional characterization of their nominal shape is problematic. The Forbes Polynomial surface formulations, a mathematical representational...Read full article

    Glossary
    aspheric
Not spherical; an optical element having one or more surfaces that are not spherical. The spherical surface of a lens may be slightly altered so as to reduce spherical aberration. Aspheric surfaces are frequently, but not necessarily, surfaces of revolution about the lens axis.
    metrology
Metrology is the science and practice of measurement. It encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, including the development of measurement standards, techniques, and instruments, as well as the application of measurement principles in various fields. The primary objectives of metrology are to ensure accuracy, reliability, and consistency in measurements and to establish traceability to recognized standards. Metrology plays a crucial role in science, industry,...
    tolerancing
The determination of the degree to which a manufactured component can deviate from its ideal specifications of material and geometry without impairing its performance.
