Optoacoustic Probe Spots Harmful Plaque Within Blood Vessels

Researchers at Skoltech are a step closer to a working optoacoustic endoscopic probe — a device that could slip inside a blood vessel and analyze atherosclerotic plaques by shining laser light on them and making them vibrate like a speaker membrane. This effect would cause the plaques to betray their chemical composition with an ultrasound signature. The method, if it can be achieved, would prove useful for robotic microsurgeries and medical diagnostic procedures. Unlike a CT scan, optoacoustic imaging does not use x-rays or other harmful radiation. It instead relies on visible...Read full article

    Glossary
    probe
Acronym for profile resolution obtained by excitation. In its simplest form, probe involves the overlap of two counter-propagating laser pulses of appropriate wavelength, such that one pulse selectively populates a given excited state of the species of interest while the other measures the increase in absorption due to the increase in the degree of excitation.
    optoacoustic
Optoacoustic, or photoacoustic, refers to a phenomenon and related techniques that involve the generation of acoustic waves in a material induced by the absorption of light. The term "optoacoustic" combines "opto-" (related to light) and "acoustic" (related to sound), reflecting the dual nature of this phenomenon. In optoacoustic imaging, a pulsed laser is typically used to irradiate a sample with short laser pulses. When the laser light is absorbed by the sample, it leads to rapid heating...
    endoscope
An endoscope is a medical device used for visualizing and examining the interior of hollow organs, body cavities, or confined spaces within the body. It consists of a flexible or rigid tube equipped with an optical system and illumination sources, allowing healthcare professionals to observe internal structures, perform diagnostic procedures, and guide surgical interventions without the need for invasive surgery. endoscope suppliers → Key components and features of an...
