Optomechanical Accelerometer Enhances Accuracy

A laser light-powered accelerometer — a sensor that detects sudden changes in velocity — operates over a greater range of frequencies than comparable, nonoptical instruments, and at a higher rate of accuracy. Researchers from NIST developed the optomechanical accelerometer device, which is 1 mm thick and bypasses reliance on mechanical strain by using light as its activator.
