SEOUL, South Korea, May 16, 2022 — Researchers at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) and the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) designed an optoelectronic logic gate (OELG) made from organic-inorganic perovskite photodiodes. The OELG architecture will help computers quickly calculate and process large amounts of information, the researchers said. A logic gate platform that can accurately compute extensive data sets, while consuming less power, is needed to support the trend toward data-intensive technologies such as artificial intelligence. Existing electronic circuits and processors are...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESSensor Could Make 3D Holograms a Feature in Mobile DevicesResearchers at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) and Yonsei University are laying the groundwork for 3D digital holography on mobile devices. Acceptable BERs range from one error per billion to one per trillion bits transmitted. It is rare...Photonics HandbookTransparent Ceramics: Enabling Large, Durable, Multifunctional Optics: Aluminum oxynitride and magnesium aluminate spinel are mechanically strong, hard and scratch resistant; they are also chemically durable. Both exhibit broadband transmittance from near-UV to mid-IR.Single-crystal sapphire has been the material of choice for defense and other applications that require extremely durable optics, but aluminum oxynitride (ALON) and magnesium aluminate (spinel) have...Photonics HandbookPolarization Mode Dispersion: Concepts and Measurement: The performance of high-speed, digital fiber optic communications systems depends upon how reliably the receiver is able to distinguish closely spaced bits of information. Dispersive effects — physical mechanisms that broaden transmitted pulses — degrade this process. There are three fundamentally different dispersive phenomena in optical fiber, of which polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is the most complex. In digital multimode fiber systems, a light pulse...Photonics HandbookPlastic Optics: Specifying Injection-Molded Polymer Optics: The versatility of polymer optics opens new doors for optical designers who understand the whys and hows of specifications. The use of precision polymer optics is becoming an increasing necessity today as products demand sophisticated light handling components to achieve desired results.
