CLEMSON, S.C., Aug. 28, 2020 — Three research teams at Clemson University joined forces to study the phase transition in nanocrystal (NC) perovskites and the correlation between phase transition and photoluminescence (PL). The researchers studied NCs that included chlorine (CsPbCl3), bromine (CsPbBr3), and iodine (CsPbI3). The researchers discovered that when exposed to heat, the chlorine-based NCs behaved differently than the iodide- or bromine-based ones. The investigation of the temperature-dependent PL and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) of NCs in the 80 to 300 K temperature range revealed a correlation...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESDefects in Perovskites Could Have Positive Impact on Optoelectronic DevicesIn a quest to design more efficient solar cells and LEDs, an engineering team from the University of Washington in St. Louis analyzed different types of defects in the semiconductor material that...Photonics.com 2/22/2019Single-Crystal Perovskites Made with Standard Practices Are Stable, FlexibleEngineers at the University of California, San Diego have developed a way to fabricate perovskites as single-crystal thin films. A typical optical delay line consists of a retroreflector or folding mirrors on...Photonics HandbookAspheric Lenses: Design Considerations: This first of two articles will cover design and manufacturing options for aspheres; the second will include more detail on manufacturing and testing processes. These articles will provide the tools optics designers need to tailor their designs to the appropriate manufacturing process and to optimize the cost of component fabrication.Aspheric surfaces are powerful tools that combine the optical corrections of multiple lenses into a single element (Figure 1) and affect performance in ways that spherical optics cannot. For example,...Photonics HandbookMachine Vision Lighting: A First-Order Consideration: Lighting, sometimes a step-child in machine vision considerations, has become a first-order consideration in automated applications. In the beginning, automated inspection focused on the camera and optics, the algorithms, the interface hardware and the processor. Applications include paints, inks, plastics, textiles and apparel, food and beverages, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, displays, and other parts and products that reflect or transmit color. The use and importance of colorimetry has grown in unison with the increase of global manufacturing and processing.
