Photon Emission from Diamond Controlled

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Oct. 17, 2011 — Researchers have captured light in tiny diamond pillars embedded in silver, releasing a stream of single photons at a controllable rate. The advance represents a milestone on the road to quantum networks in which information can be encoded in spins of electrons and carried through a network via light, one photon at a time. The finding was published in Nature Photonics, appearing online Oct. 9. The research was carried out at Harvard University. Researchers at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have managed to control the rate of emission of photons...Read full article

    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
