Photon Sieve Used to Display Holographic Images with Wide Viewing Angle

DAEJEON, South Korea, April 22, 2019 — Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have designed an ultrathin display that can project dynamic, multicolored holographic images with a wide viewing angle. Key to the new approach is its use of an ultrahigh-capacity, nonperiodic photon sieve. The photon sieve is a thin film of titanium filled with randomly oriented pinholes. By placing the photon sieve close to a transmissive LCD panel, the diffraction angle of the light field can be considerably enhanced. The actual 3D holographic display, and an electron microscope image of the...Read full article

    holography
Holography is a technique used to capture and reconstruct three-dimensional images using the principles of interference and diffraction of light. Unlike conventional photography, which records only the intensity of light, holography records both the intensity and phase information of light waves scattered from an object. This allows the faithful reproduction of the object's three-dimensional structure, including its depth, shape, and texture. The process of holography typically involves the...
    photon sieve
A photon sieve is an optical device used in the field of optics and imaging. It's designed to focus and shape light, typically for applications such as imaging or microscopy. The photon sieve operates on the principle of diffraction, utilizing an array of precisely positioned openings (or pinholes) that allow only certain diffracted orders of light to pass through while blocking others. In contrast to conventional lenses that use refraction to bend light, a photon sieve uses diffraction to...
