Photonic Security System's Holograms Prevent Forgery

Forgeries could become next to impossible with a two-level encrypted holographic security device, built by researchers at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH). The platform for the technology is a bifunctional, pixelated metasurface that allows several properties of light, including wavelength, phase, and polarization, to be controlled by the same device. The bifunctionality of the metasurface comes from the bifunctional meta-atom in the material that acts as both a resonator and a waveguide, allowing the multiplexing of colors and phase at each spatial location in the...Read full article

    GLOSSARY
    holography
The optical recording of the object wave formed by the resulting interference pattern of two mutually coherent component light beams. In the holographic process, a coherent beam first is split into two component beams, one of which irradiates the object, the second of which irradiates a recording medium. The diffraction or scattering of the first wave by the object forms the object wave that proceeds to and interferes with the second coherent beam, or reference wave at the medium. The resulting...
    liquid crystal
A type of material that possesses less geometrical regularity or order than normal solid crystals, and whose order varies in response to alterations in temperature and other quantities. Liquid crystals are characterized by phase varieties, including cholesteric, nematic and smectic. The optical properties of liquid crystals are familiar from their use in displays, known as LCDs.
    nanophotonics
The study of how light interacts with nanoscale objects and the technology of applying photons to the manipulation or sensing of nanoscale structures.
