Photosensitizer Design Absorbs Low-Energy Light, Transfers Energy Efficiently

SAPPORO, Japan, Jan. 23, 2020 — Researchers at Hokkaido University, working with colleagues in Japan to develop a photosensitizer design that could use low-energy light effectively, developed a design that made the rare earth element europium (Eu) shine five times more brightly than any previous design. Their discovery could lead to more efficient photosensitizers with a wide variety of applications. Photosensitizers are molecules that become excited when they absorb light. They then transfer this excited energy to another molecule. They are used in photochemical reactions, energy conversion systems, and photodynamic...Read full article

    Glossary
    photosensitizer
A substance that increases a material's sensitivity to electromagnetic irradiation. In photodynamic therapy, a drug used to render a target tissue sensitive to laser light.
    photochemistry
The study of chemical reactions stimulated by the properties of light.
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    photodynamic therapy
A medical technology that uses lasers or other light sources in combination with photosensitizing drugs to treat cancerous tumors.
