Plasma Probes Pulp Painlessly

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 31, 2009 – For some, nothing is more intimidating than a visit to the dentist’s office, especially when the appointment is for a root canal. The process is painful and can be a drawn-out experience. Cold plasma emitted from a dental probe disinfects saliva-derived biofilm on an extracted human tooth. When the tooth is placed 5 mm below the tubular device nozzle for 5 min, 99.99 percent of the biofilm within the root canal is removed. (Images courtesy of Dr. Chunqi Jiang) A routine root canal procedure, or endodontic treatment, involves drilling a hole inside the canal of a tooth to reach infected...Read full article

    Glossary
    emission spectroscopy
A study of the energies and wavelengths of radiation emitted by atoms and molecules when particular physical conditions are applied to them.
    monochromator
Also known as monochromatic illuminator. An instrument for isolating narrow portions of the spectrum. The spectrum of any light source is formed by a prism or grating, and an exit slit placed in the spectrum selects a narrow band of wavelengths for emission. By moving the spectrum of a source internally past the slit, the color of the emitted light can be varied at will. As most monochromators emit several percentages of unwanted light -- either white or of the wrong wavelength -- along with...
    optical emission spectroscopy
In dry etching, a method of characterizing the composition of solid materials such as metal. Atoms in the OES technique are excited by energy that comes from a spark formed between the sample and an electrode. This energy emits light, which can then be converted into a spectral signal. The intensity recorded at the peaks of this spectral signal produce accurate material composition analysis.
    photomultiplier tube
A photomultiplier tube (PMT) is a highly sensitive vacuum tube that detects and amplifies low levels of light. It is widely used in various applications where high sensitivity, fast response times, and low-light detection capabilities are crucial. Photomultiplier tubes are particularly valuable in scientific research, medical diagnostics, and industrial instrumentation. Key features and principles of PMTs include: Photoelectric effect: The operation of a photomultiplier tube is based on the...
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
    plasma
A gas made up of electrons and ions.
    scanning electron microscope
An electron microscope that uses a beam of electrons -- accelerated to high energy and focused on the sample -- to scan the sample surface, ejecting secondary electrons that form the picture of the sample.
