Polarization-Maintaining Fiber Enables Near-Chirp-Free Pulses

XI’AN, China, Feb. 11, 2022 — A team at Northwestern Polytechnical University (China) has demonstrated near-chirp-free solitons in normal-dispersion, hybrid-structure fiber lasers that contain a few meters of polarization-maintaining fiber. The solitons typically have a bandwidth and duration of 0.74 nm and 1.95 ps, respectively. Although conventional and dissipative solitons can be created by managing the dispersion and nonlinearity of fiber lasers, the generation of chirp-free solitons in all-normal-dispersion fiber lasers remains a challenge for ultrafast optics. The chirp-free pulse is called...Read full article

    birefringence
Birefringence is an optical property of certain materials that causes them to exhibit different refractive indices for light of different polarizations. In other words, when light passes through a birefringent material, it splits into two separate rays, each traveling with a different speed and direction. This phenomenon is also known as double refraction. The difference in refractive indices for the two polarizations is a characteristic feature of birefringent materials. The separation of...
    nonlinear optics
Nonlinear optics is a branch of optics that studies the optical phenomena that occur when intense light interacts with a material and induces nonlinear responses. In contrast to linear optics, where the response of a material is directly proportional to the intensity of the incident light, nonlinear optics involves optical effects that are not linearly dependent on the input light intensity. These nonlinear effects become significant at high light intensities, such as those produced by...
    gain
Also known as amplification. 1. The increase in a signal that is transmitted from one point to another through an amplifier. A material that exhibits gain rather than absorption, at certain frequencies for a signal passing through it, is known as an active medium. 2. With reference to optical properties, the term may be defined in two ways: a. the relative brightness of a rear projection screen as compared with a perfect lambertian reflective diffuser; b. the ratio of brightness in footlamberts...
