ATLANTA, June 20, 2012 — An automated pavement crack detection and sealing system equipped with LEDs and a camera increases worker safety, requires less manpower, and increases the amount of roadway covered per day. The prototype system developed at Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) can efficiently detect and fill cracks smaller than 1/8-in. wide from a vehicle moving at a speed of 3 mph. An automated crack sealing system would increase the level of safety for the workers involved, require fewer personnel, and increase the amount of roadway covered per day. These articles will provide the tools optics designers need to tailor their designs to the appropriate manufacturing process and to optimize the cost of component fabrication.Aspheric surfaces are powerful tools that combine the optical corrections of multiple lenses into a single element (Figure 1) and affect performance in ways that spherical optics cannot. For example,...Photonics HandbookInfrared Spectral Selection: It Begins with the Detector: An IR imaging system employing a narrow spectral band brings hidden images to light, broadening IR imaging’s applications.Spectral selection is a powerful tool that enhances conventional imaging tremendously. However, there are tradeoffs that need to be considered when going that route. In the search for ever-higher pixel counts for the digital still camera, it is clear that, if chip size remains constant, then “more pixels” means “smaller pixels.” The...Photonics HandbookWHITEPAPERSUsing Lighting To Optimize Camera PerformanceA rule of thumb in imaging is that there can never be too much light.
