Paris-based optics company Qioptiq announced today that Benoît Bazire is leaving after 10 years as CEO. Qioptiq, formerly known as High Tech Optics, was acquired by Candover in a buyout from Thales in 2005. Bazire's decision to leave the group and pursue other opportunities was made in agreement with Candover; he will retain an economic interest in the company. Bazire will be replaced, effective immediately, by Fredrik Arp, who has held senior executive positions in large global companies for the last 20 years, most recently as CEO and president of the Volvo Car Corp. Before that, he was CEO...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESPaul Millman, Co-founder and CEO of Chroma Technology, RetiresPaul Millman, who co-founded Chroma Technology Corp. in 1991 and helped build the firm into a successful worker-owned enterprise serving the photonics industry, is stepping down as CEO, effective...BioPhotonics Jul/Aug 2020 IssueSPIE, OSA, IEEE Fund New Photonics Program for StudentsTo support the development of future photonics professionals, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Photonics Society, the International Society for Optics and Photonics...BioPhotonics Jul/Aug 2020 IssueInPulse to Accelerate PIC Development in EuropeInPulse is a pilot project that will offer access to the latest production technology for photonic integrated circuits (PICs) based on indium phosphide to startups with promising ideas, but no access...Photonics Spectra April 2019 IssueLumiGrow Names Albere CEOLumiGrow has announced that Jay Albere II has been promoted to CEO. A typical optical delay line consists of a retroreflector or folding mirrors on...Photonics HandbookOptical Components: Finding Your Way Through the Maze: Optical components fall into two basic groups: transmissives and reflectives. Transmissives include lenses, filters, windows, optical flats, prisms, polarizers, beamsplitters, wave plates, and fiber optics; reflectives include mirrors and retroreflectors. The performance of all may be enhanced with certain substrates and thin film coatings.Lenses come in a variety of shapes, sizes and materials. They can be made of a single piece of glass or have multiple elements; their surfaces can be spherical, aspheric or cylindrical; they can be...Photonics HandbookPlastic Optics: Specifying Injection-Molded Polymer Optics: The versatility of polymer optics opens new doors for optical designers who understand the whys and hows of specifications. The use of precision polymer optics is becoming an increasing necessity today as products demand sophisticated light handling components to achieve desired results. They are used to isolate certain wavelengths or colors. Applications range from detecting the gaseous composition of a distant star to visualizing the chemical activity in a human cell. Ultraviolet (UV) bandpass filters (with effective wavelength ranges below 400 nm) pose unique design and manufacturing challenges related to the absorption of materials at short wavelengths. In their earliest forms, UV bandpass filters that were optimized for wavelengths less than 400 nm, such as the Schott UG or the Hoya U-series, were constructed of absorbing compounds in glass. Such...Photonics HandbookWHITEPAPERSHealth and Sanitization through UV LightingWith increased awareness and necessity for rapid disinfection methods due to the current coronavirus pandemic, ultraviolet disinfection has become a viable method to achieve it.
