SÃO CARLOS, Brazil, June 22, 2017 — A transistor based on quantum dots has been developed. The device, which contains micrometric and nanometric parts, can see light, count, and store information within its own structure, removing the need for a complementary memory unit. Researchers produced the transistor by coating a crystal substrate with thin film. On this microscopic substrate, nanoscopic droplets of indium arsenide act as quantum dots, confining electrons in quantized states. Memory functionality is derived from the dynamics of electrical charging and discharging of the quantum dots, creating current patterns with...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaARTICLESMicrolaser Achieves Optical Gain Via Spin-Helix LasingA microlaser that is tunable in the range of 40 nm has been developed by researchers at the University of Warsaw, the Military University of Technology in Warsaw, and the University of Southampton....Photonics Spectra June 2022 IssueDisplay Resolution Increases by 3D-Printing Quantum Dot NanopixelsA display technology developed at the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) produces 3D pixels with nanoscale dimensions by 3D-printing quantum dots (QDs) embedded in polymer nanowires....Photonics.com 8/19/2020On-Chip Deep Neural Network Detects and Classifies Images in an InstantAn optical deep neural network integrated on a chip could be a significant advancement for image classification technology. The color of the emitted light depends on the semiconductor material and composition, with LEDs generally classified into three wavelengths: ultraviolet, visible, and infrared. The wavelength range of commercially available LEDs with single-element output power of at least 5 mW is 275 to 950 nm. Each wavelength range is made from a specific semiconductor material family,...Photonics HandbookSilicon Photonics: Light Is the Ultimate Medium for High-Speed Communications: Thanks to innovations with heterogeneous material integration and multiphotonic layer stacking, silicon photonics will drive optical solutions to high volumes and low costs.Silicon photonics is widely considered a key enabling technology for further development of optical interconnect solutions needed to address growing traffic on the internet. It has become an important tool in research and applications of semiconductors, organic layers...Photonics HandbookIndustrial Lasers: An Introduction to Process Qualification: The step from successfully demonstrating a new laser process on a limited number of samples under laboratory conditions, to scaling that process up for high-volume industrial use is a big one. In particular, it’s necessary to determine how variations in process parameters affect end results, so that acceptable process input and operating ranges can be determined.Materials processing with lasers is actually a broad term for a diverse range of applications.
