Real-Time View of Living Cells

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. March 17, 2010 – For the first time scientists have recorded real-time microscopic images showing the deadly effects of naturally occurring proteins, called antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), in live bacteria. Researchers led by Angela Belcher, a professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), modified an existing, extremely sensitive technique known as high-speed atomic force microscopy (AFM) to allow them to image the bacteria in real time.
