Researchers Boost Coupling Efficiency of Lithium Niobate Devices

Researchers at Sun Yat-sen University and Nanjing University designed and fabricated a thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) edge coupler that will allow TFLN-based periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) devices to achieve efficient, ultrabroadband coupling. According to the researchers, the edge coupler increases the overall conversion efficiency of current PPLN devices by two to three orders of magnitude compared with current state-of-the-art devices. They said that TFLN-based devices will benefit from the improved coupling efficiency at the pump light and second harmonic wave. ...Read full article

    Glossary
    harmonic generation
Harmonic generation refers to a nonlinear optical process in which incoming photons interact with a material and produce new photons at integer multiples of the frequency of the incoming photons. These new photons have energies (and thus wavelengths) that are multiples of the original photons' energy. Harmonic generation occurs when the intensity of the incoming light is sufficiently high to induce nonlinear optical effects in the material. The most common form of harmonic generation is...
    integrated optics
A thin-film device containing miniature optical components connected via optical waveguides on a transparent dielectric substrate, whose lenses, detectors, filters, couplers and so forth perform operations analogous to those of integrated electronic circuits for switching, communications and logic.
    lithium niobate
A crystalline ferroelectric material used primarily as a substrate and an active medium for thin-film optical modulators and switches. It possesses very high electro-optic and piezoelectric coefficients. LiNbO3.
    thin film
A thin layer of a substance deposited on an insulating base in a vacuum by a microelectronic process. Thin films are most commonly used for antireflection, achromatic beamsplitters, color filters, narrow passband filters, semitransparent mirrors, heat control filters, high reflectivity mirrors, polarizers and reflection filters.
